Soreng District: A National Success Story in Health & Nutrition

Soreng district of Sikkim has secured the 1st position nationally in the Health & Nutrition theme under NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) for the June 2026 quarter, with a score of 78.7 on the Champions of Change Dashboard. The district has also improved its overall Composite Score from 49.5 in January 2026 to 55.5 in June 2026, securing the 3rd overall Delta Rank nationally.

The achievement reflects focused leadership, rigorous monitoring, inter-departmental coordination and sustained last-mile interventions under the guidance of District Collector, Shri Dhiraj Subedi, SCS and the dedicated district administration team, in close coordination with the Health & Family Welfare Department and its frontline health officials and workers.

Soreng has achieved 100% antenatal care registration, 99% institutional deliveries and 99% immunisation coverage among children below 15 years. The district has also recorded an impressive 97% TB treatment success rate, with 81 of 83 patients successfully completing treatment.

Under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the district conducted 146 Ayushman Arogya Shivirs over nine months and screened 7,636 people. Importantly, healthcare outreach was taken beyond conventional facilities to offices, hydropower sites, orphanages, old-age homes and monasteries, demonstrating a strong commitment to reaching vulnerable and remote populations. More than 85% of the target population has also been screened for hypertension and diabetes.

The district’s community-based mental healthcare initiative, “Hello Mann,” has further strengthened access to psychological support through weekly clinics and home visits, with 112 patients registered and 91 currently under active treatment.

This national recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgement of the exemplary leadership of the District Collector and the collective dedication of the Health Department officials, medical officers, frontline health workers, ASHAs, ANMs and partner departments and institutions. Their coordinated efforts have translated government programmes into measurable outcomes on the ground.

Soreng’s achievement demonstrates how committed district leadership, effective convergence and persistent field-level monitoring can transform an Aspirational District into a national example of health and nutrition service delivery.
